Data mining blog
Date: September 25, 2013 06:00PM

Hi everyone,

For those of you who don't know, I have a data mining blog:

[data-mining.philippe-fournier-viger.com]

It offers several blog posts about data mining such as:

- How to become a good data mining programmer?
- How to choose a good thesis topic in Data Mining?
- A Map of Data Mining Algorithms
- How to characterize and compare data mining algorithms?
- Analyzing the source code of the SPMF data mining software
- What are the steps to implement a data mining algorithm?
- How to measure the memory usage of data mining algorithms in Java?
- The importance of constraints in data mining
- Why it is important to publish source code and datasets for researchers?

and there are also some general posts about doing research.

I update this blog about twice a month, and sometimes more often, depending on my schedule.

Philippe

Hi sir,
This is Senthil Kumar, working as Assistant Professor in Private Engineering college.
I planned to pursue Research in Data Mining area,my goal is just to apply datamining techniques to achieve for environmental issues (e.g.analysing Air pollution data).
can u suggest how can i proceed this issues
i am looking for environment dataset at present but i am not getting the dataset
how can i proceed? but i am very much interested.
Next which algorthim is suitable for environmental issues and which tool can i use?

So I kindly request you to help me for datamining environmental Problem . It is my humble request.

Hi,

I don't know any environmental datasets. You would need to search. There exists some dataset repository like UCI but maybe they don't have this. Perhaps, that you can find some datasets on other websites.

To choose a data mining technique, it depends on:
1) how the data is represented (for example, do you have to consider time? is it sequences? is it spatial data? etc. etc.)
2) what you want to do with the data? what is your goal (for example, do you want to explain the past, predict the future, perform classification, discover clusters, discover outliers, etc. etc.).

So I think that the first step is to find the appropriate data and think about what you want to do with the data. This will then help you to choose the data mining techniques.

I cannot give much more advices related to environmental data since I don't work with environmental data.

Best,

Philippe
