Hi. I'm a student. I want to do a Ph.D. in data mining but i don't know which topic is interesting. Could you recommend me research topics about data mining? I have heard of doing decision tree but i think that it is too simple. Could you give me a good research topics for doing my phd in data mining????

Here are a few possible topics:
- incremental sequential rule mining
- negative sequential rule mining
- ...

The most important is to find a topic that you like and are interested in. Even if I suggest some topics, you should actually find something that you like by reading recent conferences/journal on data mining.

^^

These are some good topics!

Graph mining are a very good topic in my opinion. It may need a little bit more mathematics than some other topics. But it should be interesting. In particular, social network mining is very popular now.

Multimedia is also very promising. For example, mining video stream from camera to detect abnormal behavior, clustering similar music, discovering patterns in satellite pictures....

You could also work on medical data.

Also, temporal data is interesting to discover trends, repetitive patterns, etc. It could be applied for example to stock market data, etc.

Good luck!

Phil

Re: Ph.D project in data mining

Hi,

There are a lot of topics.

In data mining, one topic would be to work on sequential pattern mining. There are some algorithms to discover patterns that appears in sequences. However, these algorithms could be improved or alternative algorithms could be made that provide different functionnalities. For example, I have been working on sequential rule mining algorithms. I did not see any algorithms for mining uncertain sequential rules from uncertain data or fuzzy data. This could be an interesting topic.

There are also many other topics such as social network mining (a popular topic), etc.

A good way to find a topic is to read papers from recent data mining conferences or to read a general book on data mining, to see what kind of topics you like.

But more importantly, if you have a Ph.D supervisor, he should be able to give you some advices on finding a topic. I think that it should be his job to help you do that ;-)

Hope this helps,

Philippe

can we make new branch with combine of two different filed of data mining. just like hybrid

Yes

For example, I have read a paper recently on association rule hiding by using genetic algorithms. So it combines association rule mining and genetic algorithms in AI.

But if you combine two fields, the project has to make sense as whole. There should be a reason why you combine.

You could do multi-level sequential rule mining. I think that nobody has done that yet. The goal would be to combine sequential rule mining with the topic of multi-level association rule mining to define a new topic of multi-level sequential rule mining.

Hi,
I am PhD Candidate who recently completed his course work. I am interested in researching on multiclass classification. Should I approach my research through enhancing algorithms through coding or perhaps improve on performance of the algorithms using some tools like WEKA. My final goal is to test the algorithm performance on Tumor dataset with 21 classes (types of primary tumors).

Hi,

I think it depends what you like and what kind of Ph.D program you are doing. If you are doing a Ph.D in computer science, I recommend to do some coding and perhaps design some new algorithms. It may be hard to build a new classifier that is better than the existing classifier, but a possibility could be to extend the classifier to be able to handle something particular about your data, that existing classifier are not designed to handle. That could be interesting. Another possibility could be to combine the classifiers with other techniques (don't know exactly what) that would make sense for your problem. I think that there are many possibilities depending on your strengths and what you like. But make sure that it is original enough for a PhD, and it is a research problem.

Best regards,

You can search in Google Scholar : http://scholar.google.com

or

Microsoft Academic Search : http://academic.research.microsoft.com/

or search on Google.

You will find a lot of PDF files on the internet. You need to search with the appropriate keywords. For example, if you are interested in asssociation rule mining, then you search "association rule mining". If you are interested in neural networks, then you search "neural networks", etc...

Re: Ph.D project in data mining

Hi Dvijesh,

I'm going well. Hope that you are too.

I think that visualization is a good topic. Many data mining researchers focuses on algorithms. But developping good way to visualize and interactively explore the data is important. For big data, it is also important to be able to explore the data. And it is more challenging because of the volume of data.

So I think that it is an interesting topic!

Best,

Philippe

Yes dear sir,

I am fine as well.

That what exactly i think about the data visualization. it can be interesting topic. because now a days i think most of researchers are facing problem when their algorithm work with big data.

we are always saying that now a day memory is not a big problem. we have memory in TB. but we always forgot that at the same time the size of data also increase. so memory problem is still there.

also virtualization of bog data also can be future field. i don't know about this.

any way those who want to do Phd they can also try to combine cloud and data mining. it may be future field of data mining and research already started on that.

Re: Ph.D project in data mining

I think that it depends on the programming language that you use.

If you use a language like Java, there is some classes for encryption that are provided by Java. See here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4319496/how-to-encrypt-and-decrypt-data-in-java

If you use another language, then you would need to search a little bit to find what can be used.

For clustering, it depends what kind of clustering you want to do? You want to use KMeans? DBScan? some other popular algorithms? Actually there is a wide range of clustering algorithms. Personnally, I only have the source code of KMeans as part of my SPMF software. But there is some software that are specialised in clustering that you can probably find on the web that would provide more algorithms. Also, again, it depends on the programming language that you want to use.

Best,

Philippe

Can you encrypt your data?

If no, you could have a look at the topic of itemset hiding and association hiding (to hide some sensitive itemsets or association rules that you don't want other people to see in your data). There are some algorithms to do that.

The title of this topic is very abstract.

Information can mean any kind of information.

Data mining means to examinate some information to discover some new and useful information.

Communication means to communicate some information...

So this is very general.

How to link these topics? You could record some information that is communicated (for example on internet) and perform data mining on it.

In data mining what a we are doing ,extract the data and after we are analyze the data, after we collect meaningful information for future(predictive) enhancement purpose.

data mining one concept,it is telling what is data mining, advantages and purpose of data mining, but we will see what are the softwares are available in data mining.

Example: SPSS
SAS
both are data mining softwares, u want more informtion collect from the net.

Hi,

I am planning to register for Phd in Data Mining in next 3 or 4 Months.
I gone through basic data mining book(Vipin Kumar) to understand basic algorithms in DM. But, most of the algorithms are based on Machine Learning concepts. Then went and checked in Introductory Machine Learning book to verify how the DM algo is derived from ML. But, again it leads to Linear Algebra and Probability Theory.

So, here my question is, If we want to pursue Phd in Data Mining as CS student, how should we approach towards this?

Should we first focus on the area/idea which want to work on OR should we understand
the core concepts of DM,ML,Linear Algebra, Probability Theory properly.

Could you please explain briefly how should we go about this?
I hope many of the Phd aspirants are in this situation. Please add your suggestions or any links/books/articles etc.

Thanks.

Hello to every one,

After long time i come over here due to busy scheduled...

any way i find out one of the topic while i was reading for the sequential mining and that is negative sequential mining. so that can be one of the topic for the pg or Phd work...

Also in graphical mining and data visualization is the one of the area becz people can't much think about data visualization...

Bid data can be the vast area for the research because in that you can use many data mining techniques... some basic techniques use only on small amount of data so you can optimize techniques such a way that it will work for the big data as well

hi sir,

I predicate the basic problem of human being that dangerous to human life like suicide cases of student or farmers , I survey number of student mind thoughts & with help of Rajyoga meditation & data mining tools provide solution to depressed student with help of back history of students or meditation techniques.

please suggest me How to start work with help of data mining techniques?

1. what is way to collect data of student?
2. Which tool is used for mind thought traffic analysis?

is it right topic for PhD?

please suggest me.........................

I think it may be difficult to get a real dataset from a hospital since it contains some quite sensitive information. But maybe you can find some anonymized dataset. I'm not sure where, though. Or if you know some papers that used such dataset, you may try to contact the authors to ask to share their data.

"managing personal finance" is a very broad topic. Depending on what you want to within this topic, you could almost apply any data mining techniques.

For example, you could predict how much money someone will spend next month.

You could cluster similar people having similar spending behaviors. etc.

I think that you need to define more clearly what is your goal before thinking about what data mining techniques to use (how to achieve the goal)

Hi
I am thesis student and I want to do for my thesis "Prediction of second-hand cars price" with data mining method. So which method I can use for this.
Please give me your advice for the method or theory with example application if you can.
Thank you.

I think that you can treat that as a classification problem.

You could use a method like:
- K-NN (k nearest neighbors), which means that you give a price to a car based on the K most similar cars. It is a quite simple approach but it could work well
- you could use other classifier methods such as Neural networks, decision trees, etc.

You will need to carefully select the attributes for training your classifier. Then you could test it to see the prediction accuracy.

You can use Google Scholar to find some recent papers on these topics.

Some popular topics are high utility pattern mining, periodic pattern mining, sequential pattern mining, sequential rule mining. You can also get the source code and datasets in the SPMF data mining library, to start your project.

Learn this brothers and sisters, dont do a Phd if you really dont know what you want. You cant be an expert in a dictated area. Research on something you have passion with not just doing a Phd for the sake of academic advancement,i tell you will regret the time and effort, you will not enjoy either. Cool down and get focused. If you dont know your topic it means you dont know the area.

I'm a DIT student

My field of interest is data mining approach, I'm looking for a research work for my dissertation.

I want to improved K-means algorithm in terms of outlier detection. I want your opinion about my proposal.

or you can suggest a problem about any data mining algorithm that need improvements. Ex. CLARANS does it needs improvements?

In general, any algorithms can be improved in different ways (nothing is perfect). Improving K-Means has been done by various people, but you can certainly do something else that is different. For CLARANS, I don,t know the details about that algorithms but it certainly also has something that could improved. But, in general, it is better to try to improve the newer algorithms.

There are many good topics that you can research about. Graph mining and sequential pattern mining are two of the many good topics under the broad area of data mining. You can also do a research on predictive patterns and their use in various fields which will be a good idea.

Dear Sir,

I read most of the comments, Really it is helpful.

For Ph.D., a topic such as An efficient approach for mining closet frequent patterns is enough or not.

best regards

Hi Sadeq,

It is possible to do something about closed frequent patterns. However, there are many algorithms that does that already. If you want to create a novel algorithm for frequent closed itemset mining algorithm, for example, there are many algorithms such as FPClose, DCI-Closed, Closet, Charm, LCM, etc. If you create a new algorithm for that, you would need to show that it is faster, use less memory or has some other advantage about existing algorithms.

In my opinion, it is better to create a new topic by combining this with another topic。 For example:

closed itemset mining + high utility mining in a stream = closed high utility itemset mining in a stream

In that case, there are probably no existing algorithm for that problem, so you are proposing a new problem and a new algorithm, which can be more original. I just say that as an example. I do not mean that this is a good topic. But the idea is that you can combine two topics to create a new one. People working in pattern mining often do that to generate new topics.
