Has someone ever tried to find sequential patterns in song to find common mélodies? I think it could reveal Something maybe in the musical styles of artists. Any article?

You can have a look at this paper:

Kachkaev, A., Wolff, D., Barthet, M., Plumbley, M., Dykes, J., & Weyde, T. (2014). Visualising chord progressions in music collections: a big data approach. http://www.terasoft.com.tw/conf/ismir2014/LBD%5CLBD27.pdf

There are probably other relevant papers on this topics.

Since notes or chords are symbols, we can see them as sequences and then analyze what is similar to various songs or parts of song using pattern mining. I think it could perhaps find something interesting. But you may have to try it.
